The AFL-CIO is ramping up pressure on the Obama administration to change parts of the health care overhaul law that could impair benefits for millions of union members.
The nation's largest labor federation approved a strongly worded resolution on Wednesdaythat says the Affordable Care Act will drive up the costs of union-sponsored health plans to the point that workers and employers are forced to abandon them.
Some individual unions have complained about the law's impact for months, but the resolution marks the first time the AFL-CIO has gone on record embracing that view. It comes from one of the president's major boosters just as the administration is rolling out a multimillion-dollar advertising campaign to encourage Americans to sign up for health care exchanges starting Oct.

Government welfare is well intended, but it can make poor people comfortable remaining in poverty. Why pay your own way when Uncle Sam will pay it for you?
Food stamps, or in USDA parlance, the “Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP),” is an expensive and bloated welfare program. A temporary and effective safety net to help struggling Americans put food on the table undoubtedly makes sense, but SNAP has spun out-of-control.
Almost one in six, or 47.5 million, Americans now receive food stamps. Over 13 million more people receive the food subsidies today than when Obama took office.
15% of the US population is on food stamps, but some states rely on the benefits more than others.
The Wall Street Journal points out that in some states, nearly a quarter of the population relies on food stamps. Mississippi and Washington, DC top the list of food stamp enrollment “by state,” at 22% and 23% respectively.

Don’t expect SNAP to downsize anytime soon — despite spending a whopping$80 billion on food stamps last year, the Department of Agriculture (USDA) argues the program needs more funding.
The USDA is so set on expanding SNAP that it spent $43.3 million to advertise food stamps in 2011 alone. Government-produced, colorful commercials enthusiastically encourage people to sign up for the subsidies.
Moreover, the commercials portray food stamps in a wholly positive light. To be sure, government efforts to distribute food stamps should not demean recipients. But there is a better balance to be struck between safeguarding the dignity of recipients and making them feel that the SNAP assistance is an admirable, unqualified entitlement.
The commercials show up frequently on various television and radio stations. Here is a radio ad produced by Obama’s USDA, telling listeners that food stamps will make them “look amazing.”
Some ads are produced by state governments. This television commercial produced by New York tells people food stamps are ”a quick, easy, confidential way to get help.”
It would be easier to swallow the heavy expense to taxpayers for ads promoting SNAP if the program itself were not already grossly out of hand.
There are even SNAP ads targeted at illegal immigrants.
Documents obtained by Judicial Watch revealed that the USDA works with the Mexican government to promote participation by illegal immigrants.
As Judicial Watch reported, “The promotion of [SNAP] includes a Spanish-language flyer provided to the Mexican Embassy by the USDA with a statement advising Mexicans in the U.S. that they do not need to declare their immigration status in order to receive financial assistance. Emphasized in bold and underlined, the statement reads, ‘You need not divulge information regarding your immigration status in seeking this benefit for your children.’”
SNAP is also ridden with fraud. Many individuals trade their food stamps for cash and drugs, but the government does little to address this issue.
SNAP recipients receive Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards, which look and function like a debit card but are only supposed to be used to purchase food.
Despite EBT cards’ intended use, a simple search online pulls up countless discussion boards where people discuss how to trade the benefits for cash.
Making matters worse is the fact that SNAP is often counterproductive by discouraging work. When a recipient starts making too much income, they lose the benefit. The incentive to find a job is gone.

A libellous online post that is forwarded more than 500 times or viewed more than 5,000 times could land its author in jail for up to three years, according to the mainland’s first judicial interpretation to control rumours on the internet.
The legal move comes as the Communist Party ramps up its campaign to rein in the internet following President Xi Jinping’s call to “seize the ground of new media”.

The Supreme People’s Court and Supreme People’s Procuratorate, the country’s top prosecution body, jointly issued the document yesterday. It set out the terms on what constitutes a criminal offence when it comes to spreading rumours or misinformation on the internet. The guidelines take effect today.
Besides quantifying the number of views or reposts that can get an internet user in trouble, the interpretation stipulates that any untrue post found to cause mental illness, self-harm or suicide can be considered a “serious case” also punishable by up to three years in jail. Other such “serious cases” include posts that lead to mass protests, instigate ethnic or religious clashes, damage the nation’s image or “cause a bad international effect”.
Aside from facing libel charges for online rumours, an offender can also be charged with stirring up trouble, extortion or operating an illegal business.

Una explosión sacude Bengasi a un año del ataque al consulado de EE.UU. EN MI OPINION: "QUE C... HACEMOS AHI" LRGM
(CNN) — Una poderosa explosión en una de las principales calles de la ciudad libia de Bengasi dañó un edificio del Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores y una sucursal del Banco Central de Libia este miércoles, aseguró un testigo.
La explosión se produjo en el aniversario del asalto al consulado de EU en Bengasi el 11 de septiembre de 2012, en el que murieron cuatro estadounidenses, incluyendo el embajador Christopher Stevens.
Un guardia de seguridad fue herido por la explosión, reportó el Banco Central de Libia.
El director del banco, Abdel Qader Mohammed, dijo que la explosión que dañó el edificio del Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores, causó "pérdidas materiales" en las instalaciones, pero la computadora que controla su sistema no resultó dañada.

Unions to Vote on Changes in Obamacare; Law Will Have 'Devastating Impact' Wednesday, 11 Sep 2013 12:56 PM
The AFL-CIO will vote on a resolution that calls for changes to the Affordable Care Act, revealing divisions within the labor movement over whether the landmark health-care law is good for union members.
The labor federation’s executive council today approved the resolution, sending it to the delegates for debate during the final sessions of the group’s quadrennial constitutional convention, said Terry O’Sullivan, general president of the Laborer’s International Union of North America. More than 1,600 delegates and guests of the nation’s largest labor federation are meeting this week in Los Angeles.
“I didn’t hear any votes against it,” O’Sullivan said after a meeting of the executive council.
Drafts of the resolution call for changes to several provisions in the law, such as one that requires employees under certain plans to pay a fee to maintain coverage. Or one that classifies multi-employer plans as group plans to deny them subsidies. Republicans in Congress are vowing to block the changes sought by labor.

“We want to offer some constructive suggestions” to President Barack Obama, Fred Redmond, a vice president with the United Steelworkers Union and a member of the AFL-CIO executive council, said in an interview. “We’re walking a balance to make sure that our message to the president is not disrespectful and should not imply any lack of support for the plan.”
O’Sullivan said without subsidies, some of the health funds used by his members could be forced out of business. He also opposes a temporary reinsurance fee to offset costs of expanding coverage.
‘Devastating Impact’
“It can have a devastating impact on our ability to provide health insurance,” O’Sullivan said yesterday at a press briefing. “The one thing that is not acceptable at the end of the day is our members losing health insurance or our health and welfare funds going out of business because of Obamacare.”
Larry Cohen, president of the Communications Workers of America and an executive council member, said today’s action is only the first step in the bid to fix the health care law.
“The resolution is just coming out of the frustration people have about health care in America and its going to take a lot more than debate and resolutions to change that,” Cohen said in an interview. “I don’t think this is going to get fixed in a meaningful way in the weeks ahead.”
Republican Opposition
Senator Orrin Hatch, a Republican from Utah and Representative Dave Camp, a Michigan Republican, questioned the legality of the changes. Republicans opposed the 2010 law and have sought a a repeal.
“We will do whatever is within our power to ensure that the administration does not once again provide a special exemption to unions at the expense of American taxpayers,” the lawmakers said in a letter to Treasury Secretary Jack Lew.
U.S. Senator John Thune, a South Dakota Republican, this week introduced legislation that would make it illegal to provide subsides for certain existing health care plans.
A key issue in altering the law is whether the fixes sought by the unions can be implemented by the administration without congressional approval, according to Timothy Jost, a professor at Washington and Lee University School of Law in Lexington, Virginia.
For example, changing the part of the law that classifies multi-employer plans as group plans can only be made by Congress, Jost said.
“The Republicans aren’t going to fall all over themselves to make things better for the unions,” Jost said.
Subsidy Cost
There were 14.4 million union members in 2012, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The average subsidy per eligible enrollee buying insurance through exchanges the law mandated is projected to be $5,300 in 2014, according to the Congressional Budget Office.
Republicans will use labor opposition to the law to continue their attacks, according Jost. Unions, which represented 11.3 percent of workers in 2012, helped Obama’s campaign in 2008 and 2012 by getting Democratic voters out to the polls.
Richard Trumka, president of the AFL-CIO, the federation of 57 labor unions with 12 million members, supported the law when it was passed.
He has called for changes to a provision that defines a full-time workweek as 30 hours instead of the traditional 40. It has led some employers to create jobs with 29 1/2 hours of work a week to avoid paying for health care.
At a press briefing last month, Trumka said he has held meetings with White House officials over the law and would support legislation to fix what the unions perceive as problems.
The AFL-CIO resolution is also likely to target several specific provisions of the law such as the penalty for employers that don’t offer health care to workers, Redmond said.
“We think that the penalty of $2,000 for employers to pay per employee may not be enough to discourage employers from not offering health care,” Redmond said.

Logro exitoso de Obama
Durante el curso de la historia ninguno de los grandes líderes del mundo, no han podido realizar el logro que el presidente Obama ha alcanzado en las últimas semanas.
Todas las fracciones y filosofías sobre la guerra nunca llegan a un acuerdo en su pensamiento.
El presidente Obama ha logrado el pensamiento coincidente de todas estas vertientes.
Todas, por primera vez en la historia del mundo se han puesto de acuerdo para oponerse a los planes bélicos de Obama contra Siria.
Las principales fracciones que tienen filosofías definidas sobre la guerra son como sigue:
1. Los Libertarios, que consideran que sólo se debe ir a la guerra en caso de que la nación reciba un ataque directo de un enemigo-
2. Los conservadores, que creen que se debe de ir a la guerra para prevenir el ataque de un enemigo que esté preparando una agresión contra la nación.
3. Los socialistas que consideran que sólo se debe de ir a la guerra para avanzar el socialismo.
Obama ha logrado que estas tres vertientes de pensamiento se hayan unido para forzarlo a abandonar su gestión de atacar a Siria.
Lo que es interesante, es que dado el número de consejeros que están alrededor de Obama, no hayan previsto y aconsejado al presidente de que no tomara esta posición bélica cuando no afectaba directamente a los intereses de los Estados Unidos.
¿Qué puede haber causado esta conducta?
Esto nos lleva a una cuarta vertiente que ha resurgido en el mundo después de años de estar en hibernación.
Esta fracción es la Hermandad Musulmana, la que tiene el propósito de restaurar el Califato Mundial Islámico.
¿Será que el error de Obama se debe a que pertenece a esta cuarta vertiente?
¿Será que el objetivo de Obama no es defender esta nación, pero ayudar a la Hermandad Musulmana para sus propósitos de la nueva conquista del mundo?

El grandioso discurso del Presidente Obama a la nación se trataba originalmente sobre dar inicio a una guerra en Siria - una guerra muy corta, entre "punticos de ataque" y un esfuerzo "modesto", en opinión del Presidente.

Es una historia que comenzó y terminó con las meteduras de pata: amenaza de las armas químicas de la improvisada "línea roja" de Obama el año pasado, luego de la declaración del Secretario de estado John Kerry en la barrabasada de "renunciar a las armas químicas" esta semana.
En cuestión de horas, discurso de Obama tuvo que ser re-escrito, pasando desde una declaración unilateral de las hostilidades, o una petición para la aprobación del Congreso, dependiendo o de cómo se sentía en el momento sobre la manera de obedecer a la Constitución,o según veía venir los golpes……terminando en un ajuste simplista y un extraño intento de reclamar crédito parcial sobre el plan de paz de Rusia.
La torpe conducta de la administración en el caso de Siria es a la vez divertida y aterradora cuando lo vemos todo de una vez.
Érase una vez, un presidente que se presentaba como un estadista que sabía cómo hablar con determinación y claridad, después de asegurarse de tener su casa política en orden.
Pero en realidad vemos un presidente torpe y sin credibilidad en una situación en la que todavía hay un montón de asuntos pendientes del 11 de septiembre de 2001 - y el 11 de septiembre de 2012 – Un presidente que tiene que tener cuidado y buenas razones antes de considerar involucrarse en otra guerra.
Crimen de Odio
Oklahoma y los Estados Unidos recibieron un golpe el mes pasado como estado y nación ante el mundo, después de que un hombre joven de Australia recibió un disparo en la espalda mientras estaba corriendo en Duncan, Oklahoma.
Los sospechosos de asesinato en primer grado son dos adolescentes negros.
Según dijeron a la policía dispararon a este jugador del el equipo de béisbol de la Universidad Central del este porque "estaban aburridos".
La víctima, Christopher Lane, era inocente. Su único crimen podría haber sido blanco en el lugar equivocado en el momento equivocado.
Personas en la Australia nativa de Lane están tan enojadas y disgustadas que algunos están sugiriendo un boicot de América.
Algunos advierten contra enviar niños a Estados Unidos porque consideran que los están enviando a la muerte.
Imagínese si un estudiante americano fuera baleado en la espalda cuando se estaba ejercitando. Australia.
Los liberales están culpando a las armas.
Mientras se desarrollan los hechos, los sospechosos han parecido lo suficientemente locos y lleno de odio como para usar cualquier arma –un sable, un cuchillo o tal vez incluso un coche – para matar a un objetivo anónimo blanco.
Al parecer estos sospechosos tomaron tiempo jugando juegos de video violentos para conducir por la calle y matar a alguien
. ¿Por qué no vemos en primera plana de los medios liberales que esto fue un asesinato por motivos racistas?, después de todo unos adolescentes negros mataron a una persona blanca.
Se vuelven locos cuando creen que una persona blanca mató a un adolescente negro (George Zimmerman ¿recuerdan?) Pero no es una historia sobre la raza cuando los negros atacan blancos.
En la mayoría de los medios de comunicación liberales no hablan de la raza de los criminales.
La ley protege la identidad de los “sospechosos” porque son menores.
No sólo se trata de que se haga justicia, que imaginamos que se hará.
Se trata de que para que sirva de ejemplo, toda la nación tiene que tener información sobre este hecho para que tenga un efecto disuasivo, para que no ocurran más incidentes como este.
De esto se trata el castigo, si el ejemplo se diluye en las páginas interiores, la razón del castigo se diluyen con la falta de información.
Hay muchos más casos de negros que matan blancos que viceversa, si no se publica por razones de racismo a la inversa, con estos hechos, pronto no sólo no se podrá correr en Oklahoma, pero estos crímenes se repetirán desde Alaska hasta nuestra Florida.
Porque la prensa liberal se ha encargado de hacerles pensar que tienen el derecho a matar blancos, porque sus tatarabuelos fueron esclavos.
José Fernández y Barry Bonds
Estuve viendo el juego de los Marlins en el que ocurrió un incidente curioso.
El pitcher cubano José Fernández bateó su primer y único jonrón de la temporada.
Este muchacho emotivo de 21 años de edad expresó su entusiasmo observando la trayectoria de la pelota por un momento desde el plato.
Esto creó un altercado entre los peloteros de los bravos de Atlanta que trataron de atacarlo físicamente. Fernandez no respondió físicamente, se retiró y la pelea siguió entre los jugadores de ambos equipos.
Esto fue un caso aberrante, pero más aberrante es lo que sucedió despues de los acontecimientos..
Lo que sucedió es que despues del juego en conferencia de prensa el manager del equipo de los Marlins se presetó afligido y pidió sumisamente excusa a los jugadores de Atlanta (¿¿¿)
Fernández también tuvo que pedir excusas por una ofensa que no cometió,, me imagino que bajo la presión de la directiva del equipo.
Creo que los que tienen que excusarse son los peloteros de los bravos, las expresiones de emoción son un hecho cotidiano en los deportes y nunca he visto este tipo de retaliación por el equipo contrario por este hecho.. Los que demostraron una conducta impropia fueron ellos, no Fernández
Nunca vi un altercado por la conducta extremadamente arrogante de Barry Bonds cuando bateaba un Jonrón. Nunca vi que trataran de atacar físicamente a Barry Bonds.
¿Por qué?
Quizas la respuesta sea que Barry Bonds es negro y Fernández es blanco y cubano, si hubieran atacado a Barry Bonds por expesar su alegría esto hubiera sido un ataque de odio racial con consecuencias nacionales. Todavía estariamos oyendo las protestas de los militantes negros.
Pero la diferencia de valores de hoy en dia permiten que ocurra un hecho como este en que el ofendido pasa a ser culpable por su raza y origen, si la raza no es negra.
Es algo penoso que hayan echado a perder la noche de despedida del muchacho. No fue la arrogancia de Fernández, que no fue tal, pero la arrogancia de los peloteros de Atlanta y la del manager de los Marlins que criticó en vez de apoyar al muchacho la que es digna de una excusa a Fernández y a los fanáticos de Miami..
¿Por qué un muchacho de 21 años que realiza una hazaña poco usual en un Pitcher no puede expresar su alegría? ¿Por qué se tienen que sentir ofendidos de tal manera estos jugadores que le han ganado todos lo juegos a los Marlins? ¿Es que no pueden resistir que este muchachito los ha hecho quedar mal a ellos como bateadores? ¿fue tal la ofensa que haya provocado que lo traten de atacar físicamente?
El beisbol, los dos managers que criticaron a Fernández, los umpíres que no expulsaron a los jugadores de Atlanta que trataron de atacar físicamente a Fernandez, deben una excusa al muchacho y a los fanáticos de Miami.,
Lo que necesitan los Marlins son jugadores que jueguen con la emoción de Fernández, no un manager que frene la emoción y el entusiasmo de sus jugadores.
No merece Fernández estar en este equipo ripiera con una directiva inconpetente y mercenaria que es una desgracia para el deporte y una ofensa para la ciudad que los ha ayudado con sus impuestos a financiar un estadio que no merecen. Si tuvieramos políticos de verguenza le pasarían de cuenta a la directiva de los Marlins.
Esto es parte de la causa de la posición corriente de los Marlins inquilinos permanentes de las profundidades del sótano.
El equipo deja de mucho que desear después del desmantelamiento del propietario el buitre mercenario Loria que sólo piensa en la parte económica con un desprecio total al beisbol y a la ciudad de Miami, pero pudiera hacer un papel un poco mejor con otra directiva.. Pero a Loria no le importa la calidad de la directiva o de los peloteros,con tal de que sean baratos y obedientes.
Lo único que me consuela es que tuve la oportunidad de expresarle a Loria mi emoción por carta cuando me envió la documentación para renovar mi suite en el estadio.
Ahora también me consuela que lo que le dije, que no era muy delicado, fue por carta, porque si se lo hubiera dicho en persona quizas sus empleados me hubieran atacado físicamente .
Este comportamiento de la directiva de los Marlins, esta comercialización sin tener en cuenta el amor al deporte y la responsabilidad para los jugadores y los fanáticos, es la causa por lo que el estadio siempre está vacío y los pocos expectadores son de entradas regaladas para hacer lucir al estadio medio lleno.

'2 Million Bikers' Rally Converges on DC for 9/11 Parade Wednesday, 11 Sep 2013 12:54 PM By Alexandra Ward and Melanie Batley descended on Washington, D.C., Wednesday to protest a Muslim march provocatively timed for the 12th anniversary of 9/11.
While the "Million Muslim March" looked likely to be a flop, the "2 Million Bikers" event brought participants from throughout the eastern seaboard. One estimate put the number of bikers there at 880,000.
So many turned out that plans to have them ride through the streets of the Capital had to be changed. "There are so many motorcycles that trying to go through Washington, D.C., would not have worked," ride organizer Eric Zern told WTOP-Radio.
Instead, the station says the group will travel one time on the Outer Loop of the Capital Beltway from Prince George’s County, Md., to Montgomery County and then into Virginia. They’ll then return to where they started, the Harley-Davidson store in Fort Washington, Md.
Harold Murphy, a ride organizer from Pennsylvania, told Fox News: "The bikers themselves have a lot of pride. They're very patriotic people. They take a bad rap a lot of times for being bikers, but bikers have good hearts, they're honorable people, and they give you their word and their handshake and they'll stick by it."
Mike Belair, state ride coordinator for Ohio, predicted the event would be "the most patriotic display the country has ever seen."
"We're going to show support for the 9/11 victims and their families, for the police, fire, EMS, for tower workers, anyone who had family who had fallen — we're going to show support for them.
"[Sept. 11] really hurt, but it brought America together. United we stand and divided we fall. We should never forget. Never. Even another 12 years from now, I'm sure there's going to be another ride, and I'll be going then."
The Muslim march was aimed at drawing attention to America's alleged discrimination against Muslims, but the timing of the event sparked the counterdemonstration, The Huffington Post reports.
According to police estimates, the Muslim rally, renamed "Million Americans Against Fear," was expected to attract "somewhere in the hundreds, not thousands, of participants."
Even though organizers of the biker event were denied a permit to allow them to avoid traffic signals in the city, they forged ahead with the ride, which they said was intended "to remember those who were killed on 9/11 and honor our Armed Forces who fought those who precipitated this attack," according to a local Fox News station.
The National Park Service, which denied the request, said it was unable to manage the size of the event. "We couldn’t provide adequate park police services and park police escorts and it would require a lot of road closures so it was denied," spokeswoman Carol Johnsontold The Blaze.
The ride kicked off in Fort Washington at 11 a.m. The group, which stressed the ride would go on as planned, apologized for any gridlock.
"What could have been a one- or two-hour ride will now likely be an all-day event," the organizers said in a post on Facebook, according to Fox.
The group also said on its Facebook page that they will stand by the Constitution and Bill of Rights, adding that they're "against any fundamental transformation of America,"according to NBC News.
Twitter lit up with photos of bikers on their way to participate in the parade.

AFL-CIO Vote Slams Obamacare: It Will Drive Up Costs

The AFL-CIO is ramping up pressure on the Obama administration to change parts of the health care overhaul law that could impair benefits for millions of union members.
The nation's largest labor federation approved a strongly worded resolution on Wednesday that says the Affordable Care Act will drive up the costs of union-sponsored health plans to the point that workers and employers are forced to abandon them.
Some individual unions have complained about the law's impact for months, but the resolution marks the first time the AFL-CIO has gone on record embracing that view. It comes from one of the president's major boosters just as the administration is rolling out a multimillion-dollar advertising campaign to encourage Americans to sign up for health care exchanges starting Oct. 1.

Unions were among the most enthusiastic backers of the law when it passed in 2010. The resolution says labor unions still support its overall goals of reducing health costs and bringing coverage to all Americans, but it complains that the law is being implemented in a way that is "highly disruptive" to union plans.
Harold Schaitberger, president of the International Association of Firefighters, said the intent is to "point out the criticisms without being overly caustic."
"There have to be some changes made in the areas that are giving a number of our unions great concern," said Schaitberger, who chaired the committee that hammered out the resolution's language.
The resolution was approved at the AFL-CIO's quadrennial convention in Los Angeles. It claims the new law will increase costs for health plans that are jointly administered by unions and smaller employers in the construction, retail and transportation industries. That could encourage employers to hire fewer union workers or to abandon the health plans altogether and force union members to seek lower quality coverage on the new health exchanges.
Union officials are seeking rule changes that would make their low-income workers eligible for the same types of federal subsidies they could get in the exchanges. They have also suggested rules that would treat their multi-employer plans as qualified exchange plans under the new law.
But the Congressional Research Service issued a memo earlier this year finding that neither change is allowed through rulemaking. The AFL-CIO resolution calls for the law to be amended by Congress if new rules cannot satisfy their concerns.
AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka held meetings at the White House last month in which he and other union leaders pressed the administration to make changes. Trumka has said he is encouraged that the White House is listening, but that no firm proposals have been made.
The White House issued a statement Wednesday saying there is nothing in the Affordable Care Act that changes the law for union plans. The statement said the White House would continue to work with unions and other stakeholders on ways to ensure smooth implementation of the law.
The AFL-CIO resolution was toned down from a draft originally offered by Sean McGarvey, head of the AFL-CIO's Building and Construction Trades Department. The early draft said the AFL-CIO could no longer support the health care law and called for its repeal unless changes were made to protect union multi-employer plans.
Republican critics of the health care law have seized on the union complaints to fuel their push to repeal the law. At the same time, GOP leaders have warned the White House against carving out any special deal for unions.
"We will do whatever is within our power to ensure that the administration does not once again provide a special exemption to unions at the expense of American taxpayers," Michigan Rep. Dave Camp and Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch wrote in a letter this week to Treasury Secretary Jack Lew. Camp is chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee and Hatch is top Republican on the Senate Finance Committee. BREAKING NEWS : Weekly Jobless Claims Drop to ’06 Low?
The Labor Department reports the number of Americans Filing for first-time unemployment benefits fell to 292,000 last week from 323,000 the week prior, sharply lower than expectations the number would rise to 330,000. It was the lowest level since April 2006, but the Labor Department said much of the drop was due to computer upgrades in two states which have prevented full processing of claims.

Dershowitz to Newsmax: Israelis Have Lost Trust in America

Harvard law professor Alan Dershowitz tells Newsmax that while he had a “generally positive” reaction to President Barack Obama’s speech on Tuesday, he believes the Syrian crisis will have a negative effect on U.S. relations with Israel.
“I think the Israelis have basically lost trust in the Americans when it comes to Iran,” the famed attorney said in an exclusive interview following the president’s speech. “I think this increases the likelihood that Israel will have to go to it alone. What it says to the Israelis is that the president can’t declare red lines and can’t respond to the crossing of red lines.”
Dershowitz, a Newsmax contributor, urged Congress to pass its own “red line” — not only in the case of Syria’s use of chemical weapons, but also with respect to the ongoing Iranian nuclear threat.
“If it turns out this is all a fake — and they’re just buying time — the president then gets the authority to strike at any time he and the military feel it’s essential [in Syria],” Dershowitz explained. “And the same must now be true with Iran. Congress must establish a red line — the Iranians getting close to having nuclear weapons —and the president has to be authorized to decide when — and how — to respond to that red line.”
He said Congress rarely authorizes military action on its own “when it doesn’t directly involve the United States” or in the absence of a clear timeframe to act.
“I think a lot of Israelis are today thinking — as many have thought in the past — that they can’t outsource the defense of their own people, that they have to make their own decisions, make their own judgments and take their own actions as they did when they destroyed the Iraqi nuclear reactor in 1981 and various Syrian reactors more recently,” Dershowitz asserted.
He recalled being invited to the White House to discuss the Iranian threat with the president several months ago in the Oval Office.
“I sat in the Oval Office with the president and he looked me in the eye and said ‘I don’t bluff and when I say Iran will not be able to develop nuclear weapons I mean it,’” Dershowitz explained. “I’ve known him a long time and he doesn’t bluff. He was telling me the truth.”
Despite Obama’s best intentions, the president may have weakened his credibility with not only the Syrians, but also with the Iranians, and Israel with his handling of the Aug. 21 chemical attack on in the suburbs of Damascus.
“There’s an enormous difference between that and the president actually being able to carry out that promise when he now has made the decision essentially to let Congress share that decision-making with him,” according to Dershowitz.
“He can’t promise to deliver Congress. All he can promise to do is try his best — and that probably is not enough for the Israelis,” he said.
Israel will most likely be unable to wait as long for a peaceful resolution in Iran without the ability to rely on its U.S. ally.
“I think that it would be far better for world peace if the United States did it because the United States can wait longer because it has the ability to penetrate what are impenetrable targets to the Israelis,” he said. “It also commits to more diplomacy.”
Nevertheless, Dershowitz believes that Obama deserves credit for wading into what he described as a “very complex” situation with respect to Syria’s civil war.
“I challenge anybody to come up with a clear, unequivocal approach if you support either side,” Dershowitz said. “You either compromise human rights or you pose the risk for an Islamic take-over of Syria which could have terrible implications for the region, the world."
